Selecting the name of your website is the same as choosing a name for your company. It requires skill, patience, and tact. Your domain name is your online brand. Therefore, the name you select should perfectly describe what your business does and promotes. Here are the steps to follow to help you find the perfect name.

  1. Easy

Select a name that is easy for people to remember and type. For instance, using slang words such as ‘u’ instead of ‘you’ can confuse your customers when typing your website name.

Also, if you use a non-conventional word, it might be difficult for your customers to find. For instance, if you use the word ‘express’ instead of ‘express,’ your customers might have difficulty finding it.

  1. Keep it local

If you run a local business, consider including the name of your town or state on your website. This will make it much easier for local clients to find you. In some cases, customers might prefer to work with a local business rather than a national or international one, so use this to your advantage.

  1. It should be memorable.

Keep in mind that there are millions of websites. Therefore, you need to create a separate name to make your website stand out. This is as to whether it makes sense or sounds appealing. Once you select a word, please share it with others so they can give you feedback.

  1. Do your homework

Once you select website names, make sure to do your homework. Check if other companies have a similar name. This will prevent you from infringing on another company’s copyright by using the same name as them or names that sound close to the names of other companies.

The first step in doing this research is to check if the domain name you are interested in is available. You could also quickly search online to see if another company has the same name.

  1. Act quickly

Domain names get taken up fast. So once you find a name that you like, make sure to register it quickly. If you delay, you might find out another company has taken it.

  1. If the name is already taken

If the name you are interested in is already taken, don’t give up just yet. You can check if the company is actively using the name. Some companies might have closed their business but still have a registered domain name.

If this is the case, reach out to the company and let them know you are interested in buying their website name. Who knows, they might sell it to you. If you cannot find the domain name’s owner, check marketplaces where domains are flipped. You might happen to find out that it is on offer for sale.
